Follow these easy tips to darken the colour of your wedding mehendi seamlessly.
Mehendi is believed to be a symbol of fertility and has been a significant part of Indian wedding rituals for decades. It is believed that the dark hue also stands for the love that your new family would have for you. Since ancient times, its use has been recognised widely and is made an essential component of most Indian festivals. While not all brides strictly believe in the saying “The darker your mehendi, the more your husband will love you,” many still prefer their mehendi to be both beautiful and dark. This is understandable, as it significantly enhances their wedding day appearance. Although we can depend on the mehendi artist for intricate designs, achieving the desired colour often lies in our hands.
Here in this blog created by our team at Wedding Affair, we will share some effective tips to help you darken your wedding mehendi colour.
1. Wash Your Hands Before Applying Mehendi
Thoroughly wash your hands with soap before the wedding mehendi application, and dry them with a towel. Avoid using any moisturiser or cold cream afterwards, as this can hamper your skin’s ability to absorb the mehendi, resulting in a lighter colour.
2. Use Quality Eucalyptus Oil
After washing, apply a few drops of eucalyptus oil to your palms and rub them together. Ensure the oil is well absorbed before starting with the henna application.
3. Keep It on for Long Time
Although applying mehendi can be time-consuming, it’s essential not to rush the removal process. For a richer colour, allow your wedding mehendi to remain on your palms overnight.
4. Apply Lemon & Sugar Mix
Once your wedding mehendi is fully dry, create a lemon and sugar mixture. Use a cotton ball to apply it gently on your hands. It may feel sticky, but the results are worth it.
5. Utilise Clove Smoke
Another effective method for darkening your mehendi is utilising smoke from heated cloves. Simply place a few cloves in an iron pan, turn on the heat, and hold your hands over the pan for as long as you can. Repeat this process two or three times for optimal results.

6. Apply Vicks/Tiger Balm
After allowing your wedding mehendi to dry overnight, gently rub your hands together to remove it. Then, apply a generous amount of Vicks or Tiger Balm over the design. The heat from these balms is believed to darken the colour of your mehendi.
7. Use Mustard Oil or Pickle Oil
In addition to Vicks, you can also apply mustard oil or any pickle oil to further boost the colour of your wedding mehendi.
8. Wrap Your Dried Mehendi
To protect your mehendi from rubbing off before morning, wrap your hands in medical-grade paper tape once the mehendi has dried completely. This technique helps preserve your design and helps in providing a deeper stain.
9. Avoid Washing Your Hands
After trying these traditional tips, it’s crucial to keep your hands dry for at least a day. Water can prevent the henna from settling into your skin, so avoid it whenever possible. This also means steering clear of salon treatments like manicures, pedicures, or waxing that could remove the top layer of your mehendi.
10. Apply Chuna
For the darkest henna stain, use a paste of chuna (limestone powder mixed with water) after your mehendi has dried. After scraping it off, apply a layer of chuna and let it dry. You can also coat the design with mustard oil after the chuna dries to enhance the stain and moisturise your hands.
