The 2020 MTV Video Music Awards may have looked different from any regular year owing to the pandemic, but still managed to create a lot of buzz. The awards took place at various remote places across NYC, but the celebrities sure dressed for it. Lady Gaga cleaned house at the 2020 MTV Video Music Awards, while The Weeknd took home the top prize — and both pop stars sent important messages to viewers about the current state of the world: “Wear a mask” and “Justice for Jacob Blake and Breonna Taylor.” Going into Sunday night’s show, Ariana Grande and Lady Gaga led the pack with nine nominations each, one of which was their shared Video of the Year nod for their song “Rain On Me”.

The two pop icons proved to practically impossible to beat, with multiple wins under their respective belts. What’s more, Gaga made VMAs history by taking home the first-ever Tricon Award. K-pop supergroup BTS also won multiple VMAs. Gaga won five honours on Sunday, most of them for her No. 1 hit with Ariana Grande, “Rain on Me,” which the pop stars performed live for the first time. Stars like Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus, and Doja Cat posed their hearts out in their finest designer duds in front of a green screen at home or stopped by MTV’s socially-distanced NYC studio to show off their high fashion award show looks ahead of the ceremony.
