36 New Tourist Destinations Under New Government Scheme

To keep up with increasing demand, the Centre plans to make changes with the new tourist destinations.

The Centre will introduce a new scheme in April intending to improve India’s tourism sector, promising 36 new tourist destinations in the next four years. This follows the government’s recent budget commitment to develop 50 tourism hubs in collaboration with the states. These major steps are aimed to boost India’s tourism sector and keep up with the increasing demand.

The Centre is planning to develop the potential of existing tourist destinations to sustain the growth of the industry as well. With increasing demand in the sector, tourism infrastructure is lagging to match it. PM Modi has also addressed the need to start new travel avenues to contain the increasing expense of domestic travel. The proposed scheme will focus on these issues, prioritise democratisation of travel and ensure the accessibility as well as sustainability of these destinations.

The government is considering a model similar to the ‘Great Indian Destination Management Challenge’, under which 36 destinations will be developed in multiple states across the country. This scheme will be on the lines of the ‘Swadesh Darshan 2.0’ and Challenge Based Destination Development schemes, which already involve Destination Management Organizations (DMOs) for efficient oversight.

States will be invited to propose different destinations. A committee including government officials and industry stakeholders will assess the proposals based on investment potential, connectivity and job creation. If everything goes according to plan, it could give a major boost to India’s tourism sector, benefiting both domestic and international travellers.
