Emeralds were seen all around the Ambani wedding, worn by the family and the guests. What’s so special about them? Let’s decode.

The brides, the groom, the mother-in-law, the sister-in-law, and the guests, everyone wore emeralds in small or big sizes, alone or with diamonds, in the Ambani Wedding. Since the beginning of the pre-festivities the Ambanis have served looks upon looks filled with emerald jewellery. Essentially, the billionaire family has given centre stage to a gemstone whose significance and symbolism is not known to many.

Diamonds have always been the precious gemstones in India, but the Ambanis made the emeralds have a comeback with their opulent wedding celebrations. Was this for history or aesthetics, let’s understand.

Where are Emeralds from?

Emeralds are one of the most precious gemstones in the world. Formed from the mineral beryl, and coloured green by traces of chromium and vanadium, the process of the formation of these gemstones takes millions of years and tons of geological events like movement of tectonic plates, heat and pressure. Consequently, these are rarer than any other gemstones. While emeralds are found in a number of countries like Afghanistan, Brazil, Pakistan, and Zimbabwe, the most worthy emeralds are found in Colombia. Since the past 500 years, the country is known for its emeralds that are an intense green colour and highly clear. The Muzo, Chivor, and Coscuez mines are among Colombia’s most famous emerald deposits.

Emeralds and India

Well, since India has a great heritage of royalty, it also has a great heritage of royal jewellery where emeralds played an important role. One of the most renowned royal jewels of the Maharaja of Baroda was the ‘Star of India’ emerald. Another exemplary emerald is the Mogul Mughal emerald from the 17th century, weighing approximately 217.80 carats and inscribed with sacred texts.

Emeralds are deeply rooted in India’s rich historical and cultural heritage. Historically, they have been associated with royalty and divinity, believed to bring wisdom, prosperity, and protection. Traditionally, emeralds are often linked to the planet Mercury, which is considered to govern intellect and communication. This connection further elevates their status, making them a favoured choice for ceremonial and celebratory adornments, particularly in weddings, where they symbolise new beginnings and enduring love.

With the royalty giving significance to these gemstones, the royalty of the Indian country had to wear the emeralds to showcase their wealth and social standing.

Making a stunning case for emeralds, Nita Ambani was spotted laden with the gemstones on many occasions. While the source of the emerald necklace she wore during Anant and Radhika’s pre-wedding festivities is unknown, she wore another shining set to the Shubh Ashirwad ceremony which consisted of emerald necklace, earrings, maang tika, bajubandh and bangles. This set was from her personal collection designed by the family’s favourite jeweller Viren Bhagat. For the Garba ceremony of the wedding, Nita Ambani opted for a luxurious three-layered diamond and emerald neck piece that matched her oversized emerald earrings and diamond bangles.

The centrepiece of her wedding jewellery was a five row rani haar designed by Mumbai jeweller Nisha Mehta, featuring uncut diamonds and Zambian emeralds. Another impeccable emerald necklace added by Merchant to her bridal look was a pearl and emerald chandelier earring and necklace set.
