The 97th Academy Awards took place on Sunday, March 2nd, 2025, at the Dolby Theatre in Ovation Hollywood, Los Angeles. With A-list celebrities gracing the red carpets in glitzy designer pieces and Hollywood veterans giving the fans some much-needed reunions, Oscars 2025 honoured the best work in cinema through movies, actors, directors, costume designers and more, for the year 2024. ‘Anora’ Wins the Night
One of the biggest wins and surprises at Oscars 2025 was related to Sean Baker’s independent film ‘Anora’, featuring actress Mikey Madison and actor Mark Eydelshteyn in lead roles. The film led the night with five wins including ‘Best Actress in a Leading Role’, ‘Best Director’, ‘Best Film Editing’, ‘Best Picture’ and ‘Best Writing (Original Screenplay)’.
One of the biggest surprises of the evening was the 25-year-old Mikey Madison winning ‘Best Actress’ for her first-ever nomination to the awards and usurping established divas such as Demi Moore. She also became the second youngest best actress to win an Oscar. On the other hand, director Sean Baker set a record for becoming the first person to win four Academy Awards for a single film personally.

Adrien Brody for ‘Best Actor in a Leading Role’
The winner of the ‘Best Actor in a Leading Role’ was being awaited by fans with bated breath considering the nomination of Adrien Brody for ‘The Brutalist’ and Timothée Chalamet for ‘A Complete Unknown’. While Brody had scored many awards for his role in Brady Corbet’s film, Timothée was being supported by young cinema lovers for his hard work towards putting his best acting foot forward. However, the winner of the title was Adrien Brody who won his second Oscar after winning the same title for ‘The Pianist’ in 2003.
‘Flow’ Wins ‘Best Animated Feature Film’
‘Flow’ winning the ‘Best Animated Feature Film’ was another big surprise at Oscars 2025. While the film received the first Academy Award for a Latvian film, its win upset many considering the critical acclaim of ‘The Wild Robot’ and the box office success of ‘Inside Out 2’.
A Night to Remember for Zoe Saldaña and Kieran Culkin
Actress Zoe Saldaña who was seen in Jacques Audiard’s ‘Emilia Pérez’ completed her winning streak at Oscars 2025 by winning the Academy Award for ‘Best Actress in a Supporting Role’. She also became the first actor of Dominican heritage to win the title. Prior to this, the actress had won the same titles at the Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild Awards. Actor Kieran Culkin on the other hand won the ‘Best Actor in a Supporting Role’ for ‘Real Pain’ at the awards where he was nominated for the first time. He has previously won BAFTA, Critic’s Choice Awards, Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild Awards for the same.
‘I’m Still Here’ Wins ‘Best International Feature’
‘Emilia Pérez’ starring Selena Gomez, Zoe Saldaña and Karla Sofía Gascón had the most nominations for Oscars 2025, 13, compared to ‘I’m Still Here’ which had 3. However, several controversies surrounding the film including the resurfacing of Karla Sofía Gascón’s tweets hurt the film’s chances of winning big this season. Thus, many were surprised when the title for the ‘Best International Feature’ went to ‘I’m Still Here’ for which actress Fernanda Torres was nominated in the ‘Best Actress’ category.
