Tabu
New Indian Express

It may be hard to believe but Tabu turns a year older today. One of the finest actors in the Hindi film industry, Tabu has done a variety of roles in her almost 40-year-long career. For her contribution towards the arts, Tabu was awarded the fourth highest civilian honour, Padma Shri. She has also received the National Film Award twice. She is not seen frequently on the silver screen but whenever she is doing a role, Tabu gets inside the skin of the character and her portrayal of the characters appeals to the audience. Wedding Affair brings to you some of Tabu’s best performances.

Chandni Bar

Chandani Bar is a gritty tale by Madhur Bhandarkar about a small town girl Mumtaz who comes to Mumbai with her uncle, gets raped by him, turns a bar dancer, marries a gangster and goes through the pain of watching her own daughter become a bar dancer right in front of her eyes and see her son turning into a gangster. Tabu’s spectacular portrayal of Mumtaz won her a National Award in the Best Actress category.

Astitva

Indian society easily forgives infidelity when it comes to men and our movies are just the reflection of our society. But Asistiva is the first film in which a married woman opens up about her infidelity and her love child to her husband. And even if you watch the film a 100 times, the climax scene is sure to give to goose bumps every darn time. Tabu hold on to her monologue with sheer finesse as she explains that there’s no difference between men and women when it comes to sex. This one can easily be labeled as one of her best performances.

The Namesake

The Namesake is an adaptation of Jhumpa Lahri’s winning novel of the same name. Wherein Tabu essays the character of Mrs Ganguli who migrates to New York from Kolkota with her husband (Irrfan Khan) and children. Tabu’s impactful performance creates lot of sympathy towards her character by displaying innocence and helplessness when their son Gogal starts having generation conflicts with her and Mr Ganguli. She plays a mother of a 20 year old with ease.

Cheeni Kum

Cheeni Kum traces the romantic journey between a 30-year-old woman and a 64-year-old man. Tabu’s crackling chemistry with Amitabh Bachchan makes for a delightful watch. Tabu’s character makes Big B run to check his stamina after marriage. We couldn’t have imagined anyone other than Tabu and Big B for this new age love story.

Haider

The industry is raving about Tabu’s performance in Haider as much as they are about the film. In Haider, which is an adaptation of Hamlet, Tabu brings credibility to her character remarkably. And the fact that Tabu doesn’t shy away from playing a mother of an actor who’s just 9 years younger than her speaks volumes of the love for her art.
