Birthday Special: Best films of John Abraham

160
John Abraham

Ever since he exploded on the big screen in 2003 with Jism, model-turned-actor John Abraham has made a name for himself as a reliable draw at the box office. His macho charm, sculpted body and a dynamic screen presence hasn’t faded over the years. We bring you a list of best John Abraham movies over the years as the hunk turns a year older today.

Dhoom

Inspired by the Fast and Furious series, which started in 2001, the film teamed up Abhishek Bachchan as a dedicated police officer and Uday Chopra as a bumbling car thief and racing enthusiast who go after the suave John Abraham and his team of dare-devil bikers who use superbikes as getaway vehicles. The bike chases looked totally badass, the camaraderie between the Abhishek and Uday worked as well, pulsating music — its theme song became a rage — and a hunky villain who robs more for kicks than out of any genuine need — Dhoom hit upon the winning formula, what with the film turning out to be a bumper success at the box office. It was one of those rare films where the villain got more claps and whistles than the heroes — a testimony indeed to John’s growing popularity.

Taxi No 9211

This comedy/thriller was loosely based on the Hollywood hit Changing Lanes (2002). Raghav Shastri (Nana Patekar) is a cab driver who lies to his wife and pretends to be an insurance salesman. He has an altercation with Jai Mittal (John Abraham), who loses the key to the vault containing his late father’s will in Raghav’s taxi. When Raghav doesn’t return him the key, he goes to Rahghav’s house and tells his wife the truth about him. His wife leaves him and enraged, Raghav targets Jai’s girlfriend. Both try to harm each other the most but later realise the folly of their actions. Chastened, Raghav helps Jai win his father’s estate while Raghav helps unite him with his family. It was a bittersweet comedy with plenty of action involved and was appreciated for its storyline.

Kabul Express

Suhel Khan (John Abraham) and Jai Kapoor (Arshad Warsi) are Indian journalists who are sent into Afghanistan to create a report on what life is like in the country following the US Invasion of the country. They hire Taxi Driver Khyber (Hanif Humghum) for their journey. Along the way, they meet American journalist Jessica Beckham (Linda Arsenio) who wants to report on the US side of the War in Afghanistan. She joins them on their tour but the three journos are in for a shock when a Taliban official, Imran Khan (Salman Shahid), takes them hostage and persuades them to take him towards the Pakistan border. They later come to know that he’s actually a member of the Pakistani army named Wassim Chaudrey who joined the Taliban but now wants to go back to his homeland, Pakistan. They get to see the real face of the conflict, as also how war has adversely affected the Afghan landscape. It’s a sobering experience for all three and for the viewers as well.
