Home Alone
“Home Alone” is a splendid movie title because it evokes all sorts of scary nostalgia. Being left home alone, when you were a kid, meant hearing strange noises and being afraid to look in the basement – but it also meant doing all the things that grownups would tell you to stop doing if they were there. Things like staying up to watch Johnny Carson, eating all the ice cream, and sleeping in your parents’ bed. “Home Alone” is about an 8-year-old hero who does all of those things, but unfortunately he also single-handedly stymies two house burglars by booby-trapping the house. And they’re the kinds of traps that any 8-year-old could devise if he had a budget of tens of thousands of dollars and the assistance of a crew of movie special effects people.

On Christmas Eve, a long time ago, a small baby crawled into Santa’s bag of toys during a stop at an orphanage. Undetected by Santa, the child was accidentally whisked back to the North Pole. Once discovered, the boy was quickly taken under the wing of Santa’s most trusted helper and raised as an elf. But when he grew three sizes larger than everyone else in Santa’s workshop, it became clear that Buddy (Will Ferrell) would never truly fit into the elf world. So Buddy decided to set off for New York City, in search of his roots and his real father. He seeks out his real father, Walter Hobbs (James Caan), a workaholic publisher of children’s books with a place on Santa’s “naughty” list.
It’s a Wonderful Life
It’s A Wonderful Life begins on Christmas Eve in a small town in upstate New York called Bedford Falls. Up in heaven, angels discuss the plight of George Bailey, a pillar of the town community who is contemplating suicide. They decide to assign a second-tier angel, Clarence, to George, in order to help him not lose hope. To begin, they show Clarence moments from George’s life to prepare him. We see George at 12 save his brother Harry when he falls into a river in the winter. In the course of the rescue, George loses hearing in his left ear.
Die Hard Series
Everyman John McClane, New York City cop and Terrible Husband, heads out to La-La-Land on Christmas Eve to spend the holiday with his estranged wife and their two tiny tots (eyes all aglow, of course). He’s about as comfy in L.A. as a fish would be on a bicycle, so when he shows up at his wife’s office—on the 30th floor of the brand new high rise Nakatomi Plaza, he’s more than a little out of his element.
The Grinch
A town of merry Christmas-lovers called the Whos goes about their annual holiday preparations. Up in the caves north of their town, though, lives a character named the Grinch who absolutely hates Christmas. We’re not really sure why (who could hate presents and feasting?), but hey, hatred never really had a good explanation. At any rate, the Grinch has had enough of this Christmas business and he sets about trying to ruin it for the Whos. He sneaks into all of their homes and steals their Christmas decorations, meals, and gifts—an act that is both illegal and extremely Grinchy. He then takes his loot up to Mt. Crumpit and prepares to throw it off the side of the mountain. Harsh.
