Check out which flowers you must and must not include in your wedding decor.
Flowers are an integral and indispensable part of any Indian wedding. A tradition and decoration, these give weddings a colourful vibrancy, a cultural depth and a fragrant scent. In the Hindu mythology, different gods are fond of different flowers. While goddess Lakshmi is associated with a lotus, goddess Kali loves Hibiscus, god Ganesha adores marigolds and so on. The use of these flowers is also indicative of their presence and blessings.
Thus, from a bride’s hairdo to the mandap, you will find an array of flowers everywhere in a traditional wedding. However, what many are unaware of is the flowers that can be used in a traditional wedding and those that can not. Thus, as your friend who educates you about all things weddings, Team Wedding Affair has prepared a detailed list of the same. Check it out below!
Must-Have Flowers in Wedding Decor
Marigold
It is obvious that the first flowers on this list would be marigolds. In colours of orange and yellow, these are abundantly used in wedding decor to adorn arches, temples, chairs and more. Additionally, with them being the favourites of Lord Ganesha, the lord of blessed beginnings and remover of obstacles, these add a sense of devotion and protectivity to the wedding, substituting the presence of the god himself.
Jasmine
Symbolising purity and devotion, Jasmines are used in wedding decor as well as in the gajra adorned by brides on their wedding day. The flowers are the favourites of Lord Hanuman and spread a sweet fragrance throughout the space with their existence.
Sunflower
I think the first time I fell in love with sunflowers being used in wedding decor was when Hrithik Roshan married Katrina Kaif in ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’. The entire wedding looked like something out of a fairytale and yours could too if you use these vibrant blooms in your wedding. Representing joy, optimism, and the warmth of love, these are the perfect choices for a day of festivity at the upcoming summer weddings.
Rose
The classic symbols of romance and roses are present in wedding decor as well as in the bridal hairstyle. These fragrant beauties represent eternal love and add a touch of regality to the wedding with their deep red colour.
Gerbera
Blooming gerberas make for eye-catching flowers in wedding decor standing for joy, purity and enduring love. In variant pastel shades, these are just too beautiful to be left out.

Flowers to Avoid in Wedding Decor
White Lilly
In many cultures, white lilies are associated with death and funerals and thus must not be used in Indian weddings.
Frangipani
Known as ketaki in Hindi, this flower is believed to have been cursed by Lord Shiva and thus should be avoided in wedding decor.
Calotropis
Calotropis is a flower grown widely in Asian countries but is associated with detachment and asceticism. Thus these are inauspicious for weddings.
Night-Flowering Jasmine
While jasmines may be one of the most auspicious flowers to be used in Indian weddings, the same can not be said for night-flowering jasmines which are also called the tree of sorrow or tree of sadness. These flowers are mythologically related to unrequited love and grief and are against the very bonding nature of weddings.
