With the right amount of makeup, one can achieve that flawless look, even when we are anything but! Baring yourself in front of the world sans any trace of makeup is the new beauty trend that has caught the fancy of many Desi and international divas.

From Priyanka Chopra and Alia Bhatt to Demi Lovato and Miranda Kerr, Instagram is abuzz with no-makeup selfies. To look as flawless as they do, they adhere to the “No-Makeup Makeup” look which gives them that perfect natural appearance. However, as simple as it appears, achieving this look can be trickier than you’d imagine. But fret not, W.A. brings to you a step-by-step guide, so that you can also look like an effortless beauty.

Brighten up

The most important step before you forgo any kind of makeup is to prep your skin. To smoothen and brighten your skin, use a gentle exfoliant and massage your face for at least three to five minutes. This is the most basic step as it removes dirt, unclogs the pores and gives you a fresh, clean slate to work with.. Finish this step with a matte, oil-free sunscreen lotion or spray. Let it rest for a while before you move on to the next step.

Feed your face

The key to a flawless base is giving the skin its essential moisture. To avoid issues like dry skin or flaky skin, don’t forget to moisturise with an oil-free moisturiser. It gives a nice dewy finish, bringing back your skin to life. Moisturisers with a light texture are preferred as they don’t feel too greasy on the skin. Alternatively, you can use a tinted lotion and go slightly deeper, to warm up your complexion.

Forget foundation and set the canvas

When it comes to a natural looking skin complexion, forego foundation altogether. Go straight in with a concealer closest to your skin tone to help cover any discolouration and dark spots. For visible breakouts or deep under eye circles, use a pigment-rich concealer. The trick to a fresh, even complexion is your concealer brush – a small, flat brush spot-conceals any blemishes or redness. For blemishes, dab, blend and build up coverage in thin layers. For dark circles, swipe the wand under your eyes, then pat with a finger to blend.

Brush up on your blush technique

Reach for a cream blush instead of powder to get a natural-looking skin glow. You can apply it with a synthetic bristle brush or your fingers – whichever you’re more comfortable with. Tones like peaches or warm pinks give skin a natural, subtle flush. Start at the apple of your cheeks, and blend back and upward toward your hairline, keeping most of the colour in the front of your face for a youthful look. This will also add a hint of depth to your cheeks.

Groom your brows

Your eyebrows affect your skin more than any other feature, so keeping them well-groomed will help you look polished without the use of many makeup products. Use oils like castor or almond oil to make your eyebrows thicker and shinier. To set it, brush your brows up and away from your face with a spoolie or clear brow gel.

Enhance your lashes

Defined lashes are essential, even for a no-makeup look. To give your lashes the boost you can always give it a does of Vitamin E or vaseline. As an additional trick, use a flat eyeliner brush to grab a bit of mascara from the wand and apply it to just the roots of the bottom lashes. Coating the lashes entirely creates a spidery effect. A good eyelash curler is a must, so don’t forget to use it before putting on some mascara.

Swipe on a lip tint

The last step to complete your natural-looking skin makeup is to add a tint of colour to your lips. A really gorgeous, natural way to go with lip colour is a tinted balm. They deliver the perfect amount of colour, while nourishing your lips. For a more matte look, pick a nude shade that matches your the natural colour of your lips and press the colour into your lips lightly. Concentrate it in the centre and blend it out.
