Don’t we all, at some point, admire our moms and grandmas for their gorgeous skin that glows even at their age? To wonder how healthy their skin must have been in their youth makes one flood with envy. From using a pumice stone for body hair reduction to applying neem leaves’ paste on the face, our senior generation does not believe in buying mass-made products from the market. These beauty concoctions prepared by our moms and grandmas are not only acetate and paraben free but also quick to show their effects. Wedding Affair brings some homemade beauty remedies for all your dermatological problems – like dryness or rough hair!

Kajal

For us, kajal today means that delicately carved pencil of kohl that comes in black or yellow beauty packaging. One deep black stoke in the lower eyelid and the face looks immediately upbeat with a kajal.  Not for our elders. They would use kajal for its benefits to the eyes. Kajal was used to feed the eyes with necessary nutrients and its cooling properties. Here is how you can prepare your own kajal at home.

Things Required –

Edged copper plate, Brass oil lamp, Castor oil, Small metal container, Ghee, Camphor

Method –

1)      Fill 3/4th of the brass oil lamp with castor oil and light it.

2)      Take the edged copper plate and put it on the top of the lamp so that the tip of the flame deposits soot on the plate. Use a stand to place the plate in a 180-degree horizontal position from the vertical lamp.

3)      Let this process go on for a while until the lamp burns off the entire castor oil.

4)      Carefully remove the copper plate and let it cool down.

5)      The soot collection on the plate is your freshly prepared beauty kajal.

6)      Collect it in a metal container with the help of a spatula.

7)      Mix a little ghee into the collection to dampen it.

8)      Also, add a few beads of camphor and mix well for its cooling properties.

9)      Store in a cool and dry place for best results.

Moisturisers

Homemade moisturisers are super nourishing and intensely hydrating for beauty. This is because the elders prepared it with a perfect amalgamation of oils and beeswax. The result is free of any harmful chemical. Plus, the natural ingredients act as food for healthier, glowing skin. In fact, the texture of your lotion also depends on the proportions of each ingredient and the type oils used in the preparation. Unrefined coconut oil, which is made by pressing the edible flesh of the coconut and is devoid of any added chemicals, is the best for skincare. Apply on your face, hands, feet or legs for ultra-glossy and healthy skin, naturally.

Things Required –

Almond, Beeswax, Coconut oil, Vitamin E oil, Any other essential oil

Method –

1)      Using a glass bowl in a double boiler, heat the beeswax, almond oil and coconut oil together. Add any other oil if using barring the essential oils.

2)      To blend the mixture well, keep on stirring the ingredients as they start melting.

3)      Once these oils have completely melted and formed a nice blend, add the essential oils or natural scents if you want to.

4)      Use little tin containers or small jars for storage. It must be put in a wide neck jar as the concoction is quite thick and doesn’t easily pour out of slim necks.

5)      Its nourishing action is similar to that of your regular beauty moisturisers. However, this lotion is ultra-moisturizing and oilier than water-based lotions so you won’t need to use as much. It also has a longer shelf life than some homemade lotion recipes since all ingredients are already shelf stable and no water is added. Use within 6 months for best moisturizing benefits.

Hair Maks

There is no denying the fact that our grandmas want our hair to be bouncy, glossy, and as long as possible. Besides oiling the hair regularly, she also recommends natural ingredients like mehendi, soap pod and curd to keep the hair fresh and beautiful. Egg yolk is another favourite of our grandmothers when it comes to beauty and bringing shine to the hair. Sometimes, pure cream drawn from the milk is also advised to be used as a natural hair mask. Here’s how you can prepare your own super-easy homemade hair mask.

Things Required –

Yoghurt, Egg yolk, Honey OR  Banana, Coconut Oil, Olive Oil, Honey
