The Lakmé Fashion Week X FDCI had a great start, with statements from designers opening new horizons from October 12th-16th in Mumbai. This five-day fashion extravaganza featured an amalgamation of contemporary and classics being modernised with exemplary craftsmanship. The runway stayed bright with Bollywood’s starry presence, while sustainability remained the main emphasis.

Fashion label AK-OK by Anamika Khanna stirred up the fashion industry this season as the opening show of Lakmé Fashion Week. The designer launched her eagerly anticipated menswear line in addition to the eclectic sequence of women’s clothing.

Day 1 of Lakme Fashion Week X FDCI 2022 showcased fashion maestro Shahab Durazi’s collection, emphasising and highlighting timeless fashion by blending the legacy of his label with contemporary haute classics. Swapna Anumolu’s ‘Form and Feeling’ collection exhibited a charming ode to festive wear. A diverse range of personal aspects inspired the beautiful assortment of forms and colours. Actor Mrunal Thakur was the showstopper and looked stunning in a rich magenta lehenga, choli and dupatta trio, heavily encrusted with tonal 3D floral appliqués. Shalini Jaikaria and Paras Bairoliya’s brand Geisha showcased ‘Luminescent’, a collection of chic and elegant cocktail gowns and evening wear. The sheen-heavy colour palette and fabric texturing evoked visions of a moonlit night and star-spangled sky.

Lakmé Fashion Week’s first day was wrapped by Shantanu and Nikhil’s grandiose ‘Capella’ collection, enlightened by the magnificent artefact from the Baroque Era’s chandelier. Bollywood’s ravishing diva Kriti Sanon made a grand entry, looking breathtaking in an exquisite white bridal lehenga.

On Day 2, Studio Medium’s ‘Jamban Journal 2.0’, Diksha Khanna’s ‘Fluid 2023’ and Swati Kapoor’s ‘Venus’ collections opened the sustainable fashion day with diverse forms and inspirations. Abraham and Thakore’s Autumn-Winter ’22 Collection, called ‘Time Travel: Past, Present, and Future’, was unveiled, featuring a trend-agnostic take on the concept of timelessness. Contrasting monochromes accented with shimmer were used along with sustainable fabric and 3D embroidery. Anju Modi’s ‘Damayanti’ collection, presented by the TENCEL™ fibre brand, was influenced by the ethereal paintings of the legendary Indian artist Raja Ravi, whose muse was Damayanti. Actor Sanjana Sanghi ended the show with a dramatic and enchanting look, wearing a black and gold draped dhoti, a maroon bralette, and a black velvet embroidered bolero. Day 2 concluded with Satya Paul’s frenetic fashion collection ‘A Stranger Thinks’. This revolutionary collection has been designed with highly eco-conscious ideas like fashion enthusiasts who select clothing that is cruelty-free and safeguards the environment.

EshaaAmin’s extremely vivid ‘Afro Rhapsody’ collection was unveiled on Day 3. The intricate and bold details took the enthusiasts into a South African cultural setting. Actor Chitrangada Singh was the showstopper who looked stunning in a multi-coloured thigh-high slit, backless gown. Reby Jindal’s ‘GUAPA’ label paid artistic homage to Pondicherry with the ‘P. ONDI’ collection using sustainable, breathable fabrics. Actor Rhea Chakraborty looked amazing as she ended the show in a colourful backless printed gown with side cut-outs and a sheer veil. Abirr N’Nanki’s collection ‘Artopia’ was illumed by the magnificent history of India’s cultural Heritage delicately turned into motifs, intricate details, and the best 3D embroidery. Showstopper Malaika Arora flaunted a figure-hugging maxi skirt, a tiny bralette, and a long cape. Anand Kabra’s dazzling collection, ‘A Mélange of Ideas’ showcased a grand amalgamation of diverse ideas. It was about giving directions to a clever mix-and-match style and abandoning the concept of wearing boring clothes.

Day 4 started with Aisha Rao’s collection attempting to recreate her vision of Trencadis folk art while giving Catalan modernism and art nouveau a fashionable twist. Showstopper Tara Sutaria flaunted a stunning, embellished lehenga with an off-shoulder long-sleeved choli. Varun and Nidhika’s ‘Swarn’ collection was a homage to feminine power that had strength and was bold but sensual. Actor Genelia Deshmukh took to the runway, wearing a heavily embroidered long skirt with a hip accent and an unconventional black cape-style blouse. The ‘SVA’ collection by Sonam and Paras Modi with an unconventional title, ‘Mor aur Fuaara’ looked surreal with vibrant prints, rich hues and lucknowi embroidery. Actor Kunal Kapoor closed the show in a stylish trio in a multi-coloured, vertical and broad-striped mandarin collar shirt and fitted trousers. Gaurang Shah’s collection, ‘Sindoor’, included the colours of various aspects of life. For the 40 handwoven pieces, various combinations of vermillion were used.

Bollywood Diva Aditi Rao Hydari ended the show in a gold brocade lehenga choli and a vermillion dupatta. Payal Singhal’s collection titled ‘Painterly’ was the result of the pandemic that gave her the freedom to paint influenced by abstract art and miniature paintings by the Mughals. Bollywood actor Mouni Roy finished the show in a gorgeous off-white lehenga and choli with zardozi. Exquisite filigree jewellery-making technique motivated Abhishek Sharma’s ‘Dusk’ with actor Kalki Koechlin ending the show in a stunning red gown with a thigh-high split and a long trail.

On the final day, designer Nachiket Barve’s collection, ‘Ephermera’, had elegant cutwork, thread embroidery, intriguing appliqué techniques, and vibrant beading. Actor Huma Qureshi looked stunning in

a magenta embroidered lehenga and choli. An extensively researched menswear line called ‘People of Tomorrow’ by Pawan Sachdeva was presented by Babil Irrfan Khan as the showstopper in a coordinated jacket and trousers set. Rina Dhaka’s glamorous resort wear collection “Urban Tribe” flaunted archives, pieces of vintage embroidery and botanical print inspirations. Actor-interior decorator Shamita Shetty closed the show in a puff-sleeved sheer corset blouse and a printed thigh-high-slit long skirt. Shyamal & Bhumika’s SS23 collection, “Blooms of Paradise,” was a celebration of their globe-throttling muse, presenting vision of various sources, starting from the splendour of nature and enduring Indian heritage. Actor Yami Gautam ended the grand event of the season in a pastel-flared lehenga matched with a shimmery corset choli.
