Millions of Indians came together in their expression of their resolve to fight against novel coronavirus on Sunday at 9 pm, as they lit diyas, candles, firecrackers and flashlights among others in their balconies. Following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘9 pm, 9 minutes’ appeal from Friday, this was the second time people showed such unity post the solidarity on March 22 for the healthcare professionals and other essential service providers.

The nation stood together in Sunday’s symbolic gesture to portray that we are in this together. Many news sources pointed out that support turnout to PM Modi’s request was more than 90% across the country. Celebrities, influencers, industrialists and politicians posted their pictures and videos, showing their support, on their social media handles.

Much before the designated time of 9 pm, people turned off lights at their homes while lamps and candles lit up the streets as people stood in their balconies and at entrance doors in unison. Fireworks, sounds from the beating of thalis, conches, whistles and police sirens were heard, ET reported.

Many people also chanted shlokas, mantras, bhajans and ‘om’ while in their balconies. National anthems were sung and the citizens cheered along, as the solidarity went on for more than nine minutes.
