Glam Rock and Shine On. Get out your ‘blingy’ best this season and go all retro. But stay natural with your lips. Shiny tints and balmy pouts are in. ‘Bang A Gong’ and please announce that you need to ‘Make Me Smile’ like A ‘Killer Queen’ with plump lips.
Lip make-up is the most basic form of make-up that most of the women use every day — from regular workday to a glitzy party night. The make-up trends in all the Spring/Summer 2020 runway shows have lead to a wave for plumper, glossier and shinier version of lip shades donned by make-up enthusiasts and basic make-up lovers alike. One of the biggest forces behind this ‘glam-rock’ inspired lip make-up trend has been the current television favourites of the Gen-Zers, that is, HBO’s Zendaya-starrer ‘Euphoria’. From galaxy-inspired glitter dust around the eyes to vinyl-inspired layer of gloss over the lips — the ‘Euphoria’ effect has taken over the world of beauty with a blast.
On lips, on lids, on cheeks, on the skin — gloss is the trend your beauty looks need. Spring 2020 runway by CHANEL highlighted the beauty looks that accentuate a healthy glow all over your skin, including lips. Hence, translucent lip balms to the rescue. A glass-like glow to the face is the end result to be attained. The Transparent Baume Essential (by CHANEL) was used all over the face to induce that natural glow during the runway. Another trend to be noticed was the ‘bitten-lip’ effect which was imbibed using crystal-clear tinted lip colours that were just smudged over the upper-part of the lower lip, and the lowermost edge of the upper lip. Dainty corals were the colours of choice to mock-up the bitten lip. Even in the Louis Vuitton Spring 2020 runway, the vinyl layer over heavily tinted lips was apparent. The primary aim was to highlight the lips as much as the shimmer in the apparel. The luscious lips of the models, both male and female, shined with a glossy layer reflected by faint lights during the runway. The quirky trend was also visible in Alessandro Michele’s Spring 2020 runway show for Gucci at Milan Fashion Week. Clear lip gloss was donned by each of the models. A generous slick of Gucci’s Baume à Lèvres Lip Balm in shade 1, reflected off of the runway’s white-hot lights, the translucent gloss imparted a cool, clean effect against the bare, natural complexions, according to Lauren Valenti, an accredited fashion expert.
Other designers who opted for clear lip balms or lip glosses for that glass-effect include names like Giambattista Valli, Brandon Maxwell, Tom Ford, Anna Sui, Virgil Abloh for Off-White and many more.
Along with the trend alert, winter is also here. So, transparent lip balms are the way to go about your winter lip care routine. Get rid of chapped lips with lip scrubs made out of natural ingredients and protect your lips with a generous layer of hydrating lip balms sans the harmful chemicals from the excessive tints. Look for ingredients like beeswax, shea butter and petrolatum, which are good ingredients to seal water inside the lips, helping to prevent and repair chapping. Other ingredients like coconut, jojoba and almond oils are ideal to look for if you want good hydration and moisture. Those not looking for hydration benefits per se, but just want to set their fashion foot forward, clear lipsticks are the products to own. Products like Fenty Beauty Gloss Bomb Universal Lip Luminizer, Bobbi Brown Crystal Lip Gloss, Shiseido Crystal Gel Gloss, among others are the best products for you this winter season.
TONYMOLY Mini Peach Lip Balm That Work, Burt’s Bees Beeswax Lip Balm, and Vaseline Petroleum Jelly are the household products that will take care of your lips while rendering that envious glass shine.
Since luscious lips are ‘the demand’ of the current season, people try to create a plump lip effect with over-exaggerated lipstick applications and generous use of lip liners. However, these techniques only create a clumsy look and cakey make-up effect. For luscious lips, lip plumper is the best product for you. Often, women resort to permanent fillers and injections for plump lips. But these products are harmful for your lips in the long term. Apart from being tedious and painful processes, the surgeries and fillers do more harm than benefit to your health.
The best alternative for these treatments is the range of au courant products available in the market that accentuate your lips only with minimum sting and maximum shine. These include Too Faced Lip Injection Extreme, Estée Lauder Dimension Plump + Fill Expert Lip Treatment, Wunderkiss Controlled Lip Plumping Gloss & Booster, and Dior Addict Lip Maximizer among various others.
One can easily call the Kardashian-Jenner family the birth giver to the roar of lip plumping products in the market. With Kylie’s lip fillers creating a whole set of conspiracy theories and Kim’s plump lips among other things inviting a whole lot of buzz, the family continues to invest in plumper lips and continues to influence the public to invest in lip plumping techniques.
Not just the Kardashians but there is a swarm of celebrities who make the masses go green with envy with their plump lips and nude glossy lip balms that adorn them. The lip queen with the most enviable pout Angelina Jolie, supermodel Rosie Huntington-Whiteley with her sumptuous lips, and the mass favourite Emily Ratajkowski with her natural pout are the girls who have the most beautiful lips.
There are a few trends that have been ditched in the Spring/Summer 2020 shows. A few of these had been surging popularity towards the end of 2018 and the beginning of 2019, but not anymore. The top trend that has been skipped this season is that of matte lipsticks. No one desires for matte finished lips now — gloss and shine are making heads turn this season. Another trend that caught fire in the recent past was that of glittery lips when supermodel sisters Bella Hadid and Gigi Hadid had posed donning glitter lips for FENDI during Milan Fashion Week in 2016. The trend went even more viral with each year before finally holding its reins in 2019. The demand is not for artificial glitter on lips now, but for shiny, balmy lips.
Inspired by the retro fashion of the late 60s, 70s and 80s, glam rock has found a warm space in the hearts of the masses. Glossy red lips are in. Ace makeup artist Nami Yoshida prepped the skin with moisturiser (for the latest runway shows) to ensure a nice glow and used three different reds to create a vivid high-shine, cherry red gloss. Such look on the lips is a statement in itself and needs no other element to help you stand out in the crowd.
So soak yourself in a generous amount of hydrating lip balms and gloss all over your face to nourish your skin and lips while being at your fashionable best, this season. A porcelain, healthy and radiant glow is in. With plump lips, be kiss-ready every day. And with a shiny coating on your pout, pucker up and enjoy the season.
