Louis Vuitton presented its Spring-Summer 2021 Men’s collection ‘Message in a Bottle’ online from Shanghai this past Saturday. It comes with an interesting concept as it is one in a series of international events that will fully unveil the collection. The other locations, therefore, are Paris and Tokyo. This concept also reinforces men’s artistic director Virgil Abloh’s commitment to inclusivity and diversity via its entire vibe and message.

In a statement, he calls his ‘manifesto’ Virgil said, “It’s my desire to imbue the traditional codes of luxury with my own progressive values. Nuance, like sarcasm, can be difficult to understand. Every season, my team updates ‘The vocabulary according to Virgil Abloh: A liberal definition of terms and explanation of ideas.’ Under ‘I’ for ‘Irony’: “The presence of Virgil Abloh at Louis Vuitton.” For also all intents and nuances, I have often spelt out the interceptive reality of myself as a black man in a French luxury house. I am well aware of my responsibilities. Rather than preaching about it, I hope to lead by example and unlock the door for future generations.”

Only clothes crossed continents

The event was an actual live old-normal “experiential” spectacular. The models also walked in front of local guests sitting in rows just as audiences always would do before April, not wearing masks. Also, locally cast models walked the ramp. “Gatherings are safe over there,” he noted. Yet neither the creative director, now at home in America nor anyone from L.V.’s Paris headquarters had travelled to China. Only the clothes crossed continents. And this is where Abloh took up the storyline, which began within the animation Zoooom With Friends, a video populated with cartoon animal “stowaways” who’d jumped aboard L.V. shipping containers. There were few face masks to be seen. Audience members sat in close proximity to one another, fanning themselves with Louis Vuitton paddles in the early evening heat. And while there were safety measures, including temperature checks and paper-free tickets, the show marked a return to normalcy, said creative consultant and former Elle China editor, Ye Zi (also known as Leaf Greener), who was in attendance. “It’s like we’re back to our new normal lifestyle,” she said in a phone interview. About the Collection

Louis Vuitton’s new upcycling program will everything LV finding new life under Abloh’s purview. “Ideas – the very foundation of fashion – are no longer disposable,” explains a press release, outlining this initiative as Abloh’s ‘next chapter’ at the luxury house. Spring/Summer 2021 garments are pieced together from overstock textiles, previous seasons’ clothing and refurbished ideas. Out of the entire show, only two models wore garments made of new material. Twenty-five others wore clothing that features recycled material and another 25 wore items directly lifted from past shows, hence, celebrating the design team’s favourite creations.
