Mahashivratri 2025 is being celebrated all over India on February 26th, 2025. Honouring Lord Shiva, one of the main Hindu Trinity gods, the festival’s name literally means the Great Night of Shiva. Celebrated every year on Chaturdashi of Krishna Paksha during the Hindu month of Phalgun (February-March), on the fourteenth night of the waning moon, Mahashivratri marks the conclusion of Mahakumbh where devotees gather to take a dip inside the holy sangam. 

This year Mahashivratri and the shahi snan of Mahakumbh are coinciding to create a rare auspicious day. This year a rare astronomical phenomenon will occur in the universe aligning all seven planets, making them visible together, increasing the spirituality of the day and marking the beginning of positivity in everyone’s life. Rituals of Mahashivratri 2025

Fasting

On the auspicious day of Mahashivratri, devotees observe a fast to show their self-control against the evil necessities and devotion towards Lord Shiva. While some opt to have one meal for an entire day others observe a nirjala fast where they don’t even drink water. 

Praying

While people with good health choose to keep a fast, kids, elders and those with some ailments are advised to pray. On Maharshivratri, devotees perform abhishekam to please Lord Shiva where they offer him 5 sacred items, water, milk, honey, sugar powder and ghee along with bilva leaves, dhatura and bhang. During the pooja, they also chant holy mantras of “Om Namah Shivaya” and the “Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra.”
