Love is known to transcend all obstacles and have its say in the end, just as the old saying goes, “All’s well that ends well”. Destiny brought their hearts close, love made them build a family they cherish. They are each other’s pillar of strength, displaying immense loyalty and love at the time of need. Hand in hand, they face the world with courage and grace.

Here’s a story that will reinstate your faith in true love, a story that seems no less that an ethereal dream, the story of the golden couple of Bollywood,  Abhishek And Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.

The Onset

The star couple first met in 1997 on the sets of Aishwarya’s first Bollywood project, ‘Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya’. She starred opposite Abhishek’s good friend, Bobby Deol. Who knew this casual meeting will lead to a true friendship that will last a lifetime? Abhishek hadn’t made his debut by that time. He soon made a place for himself in the industry with his debut alongside Kareena Kapoor Khan in the J.P. Dutta directorial, ‘Refugee’. The project did reasonably well at the box-office and was the fifth highest-grossing film of that year. It also fetched numerous prestigious awards.

Destiny played its cards out pretty well and the dazzling duo was brought together again in the year 2000 on the sets of their first ever outing as co-stars, ‘Dhaai Akshar Prem Ke’. The film didn’t help their respective careers much, but laid the foundations of respect and understanding. A couple of years later, they collaborated again for ‘Kuch Naa Kaho’. At this time, they were just friends and were personally involved with someone else. But fate had other plans for them, as their respective relationships fell apart and both of them got immersed into their work. All this time they were dear friends and immensely admired each other’s work.

This mutual respect soon blossomed into something even more profound. Many say that the sparks of love ignited between the two while shooting for the famous item song, Kajra Re, on the sets of ‘Bunty Aur Babli’. However, it was in 2006-2007, when the pair got to spend a lot of time in each other’s company while shooting together for three films, ‘Umrao Jaan’, ‘Guru’ and ‘Dhoom 2’. It was especially during the time while shooting for ‘Dhoom 2’, that they started developing feelings towards each other. The actress’ uncomplicated nature and mesmerising smile made Abhishek go weak in his knees.

The Proposal

After working together with the actress in his initial films, things took a turn for the best while the duo was shooting for the J.P. Dutta directorial, ‘Umrao Jaan’. Finally, it was after the premiere of their blockbuster film, ‘Guru’, when he proposed to her in New York, and she immediately accepted his proposal. In an interview the actor confessed, “I was filming in New York for a film. And I used to stand on the balcony of my hotel room and wish that, one day, wouldn’t it be nice if I was together with her, married. Years later, we were there for the premiere of ‘Guru’. After the premiere, we were back in the hotel. So, I took her to the very same balcony, and asked her to marry me.”

While in one of her interviews, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan laughed and recalled that her husband proposed to her with a studio prop from the sets of ‘Guru’, and not an actual diamond ring. She went on to reveal that, “He is original and real, like our relationship. There is nothing predictable or boring about our life. We nurture each other. The gesture was spontaneous and meaningful. God has been kind to us. We can certainly afford those standard rocks. But do we need them?” The pair certainly are the epitome of true love and have always shown immense love, appreciation and respect for each other.

After the formal proposal, the two flew back to Mumbai and got engaged at the Bachchan’s residence. After their engagement, both the stars became a little more open about their love life and were often spotted together on movie dates and nightclub outings. Their love for each other strengthened with each passing day and they stood by each other through thick and thin and surmounted all the obstacles that came their way. Their love is what fairy tales are made of.

Happily Ever After

The couple finally tied the knot on April 20, 2007. The lavish baarat started from one of the residences of the Bachchans, Jalsa, to their other house, Prateeksha. Many famous Bollywood celebrities, politicians and businessmen attended the wedding to shower their blessings on the newlyweds. After almost 12 years of togetherness, they both still love each other immensely. The actress said in her one of her interviews, “Abhishek is my source of inspiration. He is always so supportive. Whenever I am confused and don’t know what to do, I look at him and he solves the duality in me like magic. He is the real ‘Padma Shri’ and I am his ‘Padma Shrimati’.” Even junior Bachchan has only nice things to say about his wife and was heard saying, “Aishwarya is my anchor. She is my buddy, my closest friend. I can discuss anything with her. Our relationship is not based on her being Aishwarya Rai or me coming from an illustrious family. It is just about two people falling in love which has organically grown. We started during ‘Guru’. It was meant to be.”

The couple welcomed their little bundle of joy on November 16, 2011. Being the hands-on mother that she is, Aishwarya left her work to give her entire time and attention to their daughter. Now that Aaradhya is big enough, the actress has bounced back to work and is already giving superhits. Her husband has always been supportive of her decisions and staunchly believes that taking care of the child is never just a mother’s responsibility.

According to sources, the lovely will soon be seen on the silver screen in ‘Gulab Jamun’.  This will surely be a treat for cinemagoers who will see the couple reunite after nine years, their last film together being ‘Raavan’.
