With its usual ostentatious glamour, the Paris Fashion haute couture Week (PFW) concluded from January 20 to January 23, 2020. Being an haute couture week, the designs and styles were evidently over-the-top and tongue-in-cheek. From the anticipated futuristic drama in Iris van Herpen’s couture to the extravagant designs by the houses of Dior, Chanel, Valentino and the farewell show by Jean Paul Gaultier, the PFW was replete with some significant moments.
On the very first day of the PFW, Maria Grazia Chiuri presented her Dior Haute Couture Spring 2020 runway show, and asked the audience — “What If Women Ruled the World?” Based on her close-to-heart theme of Feminism, the show was inspired by Greek mythology as the models walked the ramp as Greek goddesses in their glittery, golden couture.
The messages and inspirations rooted in fashion shows tend to get creative with time. For instance, Clare Waight Keller based her collection — Une Lettre d’Amour — for Givenchy, in her recollections of Sissinghurst Castle’s garden rooms planted at by Vita Sackville-West and in passionate love letters between Sackville-West and Virginia Woolf. Kaia Gerber served the finale look from the collection donning a delicate while gown with a gigantic bell-style cape accentuated with delicate 3D flower embroidery.
