Queen Elizabeth II attended a Christmas Day church service as a crowd of local residents gathered like every year in  2017. All the senior members of the royal family were present along with newcomer Meghan Markle, Prince Harry’s American fiancee. It was her first public appearance with other senior royals, and she posed with photographs with the whole group, including the Queen. The crowd was larger than in previous years, perhaps because of curiosity about Markle. This was outside the royal protocol as she wasn’t an official member yet.

The days leading up to the Royal Wedding were full of confusion. It was about whether Meghan Markle’s father Thomas Markle would be walking her down the aisle. This was because he was embroiled in a paparazzi photo scandal and later had medical complications. When it was made clear that he would not be attending, many questioned how the bride would choose to enter the chapel. Meghan made the powerful choice to walk herself down the aisle towards her future husband. She was then met halfway by her father in law to-be Prince Charles. (ES – Insider)

Stepping Back as Senior Royals

In January 2020, the royal couple made a shocking announcement. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced they will step back as “senior” royals and work to become financially independent. In a statement, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle also said they plan to split their time between the UK and North America. The BBC understood that no other royal – including the Queen or Prince William – was consulted before the statement and Buckingham Palace is “disappointed”. Senior royals were allegedly “hurt” by the announcement. “We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen,” they announced.

On May 6, 2019, the couple welcomed their first child – a boy! The Sussexes announced on their social media the following statement. We are pleased to announce that Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Sussex welcomed their firstborn child in the early morning on May 6th, 2019. Their Royal Highnesses’ son weighs 7lbs. 3oz. The Duchess and baby are both healthy and well, and the couple thank members of the public for their shared excitement and support during this very special time in their lives.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stepped out at the Endeavour Fund Awards. It celebrates the sporting achievements of injured ex-service personnel, in London’s financial district on March 5, 2020. This marked the beginning of their end of royal engagements. Finally, Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex marked their final engagement as senior members of the royal family.  They did so by attending the annual Commonwealth Service at Westminster Abbey. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle finally bade farewell to their duties as senior royals with this.
