The upcoming Ajay Devgn and Kajol starrer, ‘Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior’, has become the latest historical movie of Bollywood to land in a legal soup. The film’s narrative is set in the 17th century and is based on the life of Tanaji Malusare, who was the military leader of King Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, founder of the Maratha Empire.

Earlier the film was called ‘Taanaji: The Unsung Warrior’,  later was changed to “Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior” due to numerological reasons. Recently the release date of the film also changed. It was scheduled for a worldwide release this year on November 22 and now will be released next year on January 10 as stated by Ajay Devgn in a tweet. Kajol and Ajay Devgn are going to appear on the screen as a couple after a gap of 11 years.

Recently, Akhil Bhartiya Kshatriya Koli Rajput Sangh had filed a petition in the Delhi High Court against the period drama. It claimed that the director has not potrayed the true lineage of the Maratha warrior Tanaji Malusare.

Earlier, MLA Jitendra Awhad Nationalist Congress Party has claimed that the film has certain inaccuracies that need to be changed immediately or else the film will go down and would not be available for public viewing. He pointed out loopholes in a scene where Chhatrapati Shivaji is hit and another dialogue about his sword protecting a women’s ghoonghat (veil) and a Brahmin’s janeu (sacred thread). While the king never kept women in ghoonghat. His sword was not meant to save sacred threads but to safeguard the interests of each and every caste, creed and religion. He claimed that all this is supposed to change before the movie is released else a strict action can be taken.

The matter was listed before the court today on December 13, but could not be heard as the presiding judge was on a  leave. It will now be heard on December 19. The historical action drama will be released in 3D, starring Ajay Devgn as Tanaji Malusare while Kajol stars as his wife Savitribai. Saif Ali Khan plays the antagonist Udaybhan Rathod in the movie.

Earlier also, movies like ‘Padmaavat’ and ‘Panipat’ have also landed in trouble over the depiction of historical facts.
