Taking care of curly hair does take a little strategic thinking. Luckily, you can get your curls shiny, healthy, and natural looking all while you sleep. Simple switch ups to your nightly routine — such as sleeping on your side and changing to a satin pillowcase — can have a big impact on your hair’s health and appearance. Wedding Affair brings to you few simple tips that every curly haired girl must follow.

Put Your Hair In A Pineapple

You can protect your hair while you sleep by using a satin or cotton scrunchie (not a hair elastic) to tie your hair up at the crown of your head. Simply gather your hair at the top of your head and tie the scrunchie around it one time, being careful not to pull too hard or make the pineapple too tight. You can also combine this method with a silk scarf or hair bonnet. The more secure your hair is, the less hair strands are rubbing up against other follicles or against your bedding. Simple twists using bobby pins or small elastics, as well as well-secured braids can stabilize the structure of your curls through the night.

Use Some Product

A leave-in conditioner that adds keratin to your hair follicle can infuse your hair with shine and bounce. Spray-on conditioners may also help strengthen hair strands that have been damaged by hair dye and heat styling, and may make your hair softer and easier to style in the morning.

Deep Condition Your Curls Before Washing

Pour the oil or other deep conditioner onto the tips of your fingers after fully wetting your hair and massage your scalp for about 4-5 minutes – this is essential for a clean scalp. Then proceed to detangle your curl hair with the product as well. Apply a generous amount to your lengths and add more water to my hair. This creates good slip, which reduces friction. Finger detangle your curls in sections, working in a downward motion, starting from the ends, all the way to the roots.

Use Leave-in Conditioner or Styling Cream After Washing Your Curls

Apply a layer of either leave-in cream or styling cream to your curly hair with the “praying hands” method. Never use both leave-in and styling cream, because this would be too much product. After applying the cream, gently rake your hair once to ensure even distribution. If I notice that you don’t have enough slip (a “seaweed” feeling) in a specific section, add more cream. The secret with raking is that rake the product once and no more. Too much raking will break up the curls and they will become limp once dry.

Use A Hair Gel Or Custard To Seal The Deal

Apply a generous layer of gel or custard. At this point, there is no more raking. Simply use the “scrunch and pump” method, with your head flipped forward, for extra volume. Scrunch and pump is a beautiful technique for natural curl formation because it doesn’t manipulate the curls to try and make them behave in a certain way. It simply activates them, rather quickly. Scrunch each section and pump them several times while hearing a very wet, squishy sound. The pumping motion helps to disperse all the water and product further into the hair while activating natural ringlets.
