Holi, the biggest Indian festival, is all about celebrating several things and means a lot to the netizens. Nicknamed the festival of colors all over the world, it welcomes the spring season and divine love between Radha and Krishna, the Hindu deities. But that is not all, it also symbolises a lot—good overcoming evil and commemoration of the victory of Vishnu in the form of Narasimha over Hiranyakashipu.

With the onset of spring’s golden colors, India is prepared to dive into the colourful celebration of Holi on March 14, 2025. Beyond the colours, this festival of colours is also a tale of love, unity, and good’s unstoppable victory over evil.

The Legends Behind the Colours

Holi

Holika and Prahlad:  A tale of unwavering devotion that won over the evil. According to this legend, the tyrannical king of Daityas, Hiranyakashipu, with the boon of virtual indestruction was causing havoc on everyone around him. To prevent this, God decided to bless him with a son, Prahlad, who was blessed with a determined devotion to Lord Vishnu. As, his father only considered himself as a God. He grew annoyed by his son’s loyalty towards Vishnu to the point that he conspired to kill him through many ways, but failed miserably due to his son’s God protecting him.

At one such instance, he approached his sister Holika, blessed with the boon of invulnerability towards fire. She sat with her nephew on the burning logs of wood, but instead of Prahlad, she turned into ashes, and the devotee returned unscathed. This particular incident gave birth to the ritual of Holika Dahan. After trying everything, Hiranyakashipu tried to kill his son in front of a whole sabha. Before he could proceed further, Lord Vishnu appeared in a Narasimha avatar and killed him with his bare hands at the sandhya muhurat on the threshold—having found the perfect solution to the Daitya king’s boon.

Krishna and Radha: As we all know, our beloved God, Krishna, was blessed with dusky skin, which his divine counterpart, Radha, used to tease him about. So, to match the colour of her skin with that of his own, he lovingly coloured her cheeks. This simple act is responsible for inspiring the widely adored tradition of colour playing during the festival.

The Rituals and Celebrations

Holi

Holi is celebrated mainly in two days by following two different traditions:

  1. Holika Dahan (March 13, 2025): In the evening just before the day of holi festivities, people gather around a bonfire and offer things like coconut, sugarcane, jaggery, ghee, mustard seeds, and sesame seed to the fire, symbolising the destrucvtion and cleansing of evil and impurities from their lives. Then, people dance together to some music till the fire is alive, celebrating harmony and togetherness.
  2. Rangwali Holi (March 14, 2025): Following the night of Holika Dahan, the world transforms into a vibrant mosaic of colours. People joyfully apply colours on their loved ones showing their love and care towards each other. This festival is used as a perfect opportunity to dance to melodies and feast on festive delicacies like gujiya and thandai.
