“I believe Indian tourism can evolve seamlessly into a 3-trillion economy,” says Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, India’s Minister of Culture and Tourism.

In a candid interview, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, India’s Minister of Culture and Tourism spoke passionately about the potential the ever-growing Indian tourism industry possesses to build a three-trillion economy of our country. Post-pandemic, global tourism rebounded robustly with India standing at a pivotal stage to redefine its pride as a premier global destination. With his previous experience in water conservation and agriculture, Shekhawat envisions a beautiful future for India’s dynamic tourism and hospitality sectors elevating to the global stage.

Development: A Collaborative Effort

In the interview, Shekhawat further added that infrastructure development will remain a priority for the Ministry of Tourism to enhance the connectivity to popular destinations. He highlighted the collaborative approach achieved by involving other government bodies. He also mentioned the Ministry’s efforts that are being taken to cope with the issue of over-tourism in popular destinations. The ministry aims to create a more balanced tourism ecosystem by promoting lesser-known destinations and improving local infrastructure.

Niche Tourism Focus

As Indian tourism continues to evolve, Shekhawat emphasised the importance of focusing on niche markets like adventure tourism, wedding tourism, and wildlife tourism. He mentioned that the ministry is actively promoting these sectors to diversify India’s tourism to attract a broader range of visitors. 

In recent times, wellness tourism has also seen a significant surge. Shekhawat believes that wellness tourism is India’s gift to the world.
