The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) India has announced a significant leadership change, appointing Amit Pratihari as Managing Director on October 1, 2025.
In this new role, Amit Pratihari will oversee the complete bouquet of operations of GIA India, the highly renowned gem laboratories at Mumbai and Surat, and the GIA educational facility at Mumbai. He joins the forefront of India’s thriving diamond and gemstone industry, now the global hub of diamond cutting, polishing, and certification.
Pratihari joins GIA India with more than twenty years of prestigious brand and retail management experience. He was the Managing Director of Forevermark India and De Beers before the current position, in which he demonstrated visionary leadership in the luxury diamond market. His stewardship of the iconic brands gave him unmatched insight into the trends of the end-consumer, the branding of the brands, as well as the fluctuating fortunes of India’s jewellery market.
The appointment comes at an apt time for India’s diamond industry as the country solidifies its share in the global diamond trade. Surat alone produces about 90 per cent of the diamonds cut in the world, and the certification facilities of the GIA help maintain industry standards as well as consumer confidence. Commentators recognise Pratihari’s extensive experience in operational excellence, along with brand-building positions him well for charting the next phase of growth at GIA India. His experience blending luxury retail with technical expertise should move the services of GIA India forward without diluting the company’s standing for gemological expertise and learning.
