Brothers and sisters all over the country will be celebrating their bond on the festival of Bhaidooj, being held on 3rd November 2024. Also known as Bhaibeej, Bhai Tika and more the festival is celebrated on the second lunar day of the Shukla Paksha of Kartika.
Why is Bhaidooj Celebrated?
As per the historical texts, after defeating the Asura Narakasura, Lord Krishna visited his sister Subhadra who gave him a warm welcome with sweets and flowers. She affectionately applied tilaka on his forehead and prayed for his health and prosperity. This event is considered to be the origin of the festival of Bhaidooj which has been celebrated since then for years. Another story involves Yama, the God of Death, visiting his sister Yamuna on the second day after the new moon. Their reunion inspired the celebration, which is also called Yamadvitiya in parts of India.

How to Celebrate Bhaidooj?
On the day of Bhaidooj sisters decorate their homes with flowers and rangoli, prepare a grand feast for their brothers and fast till they have applied a tilaka on their forehead. Brothers on the other hand arrive at their sister’s home with lots of gifts and sweets. They also observe a fast till the tilaka is applied. After the sister applies the tilaka on her brother’s forehead she does his aarti and then they both have food together.
