October 12th, 2024 will be celebrated as Dussehra this year, rejoicing in the victory of Lord Rama over the Demon King Ravana. Also known as Vijaya Dashmi, the day is celebrated all over the country as a symbol of the prevalence and victory of good over evil. In many parts of the country, it also remembers the victory of Goddess Durga over the demon Mahishasura. Additionally, Dussehra also marks the last day of the nine-day festival of Navratri.

Dussehra is a festival that not only involves a humongous celebration country-wide but also reiterates certain values preached in the Hindu tradition. It symbolises the importance of unity and cooperation by highlighting how Lord Rama was able to defeat Ravana because of his allies and the bond he shared with them. It also marks the ending of the past and the beginning of the future where a lot of people begin new ventures on this day considering its auspiciousness. And, like any other Indian festival, it gives families and friends a chance to gather and celebrate with feasts and gifts.

One of the most prominent ways of celebrating this festival across the country is burning the effigies of the demon king Ravana, signifying the death of evil. However, considering the diversity of our country each festival has a different ritual in a different region. Thus, in the southern part of the country, people tend to perform Ayudha Puja on Dussehra where tools, vehicles and gadgets are cleaned, decorated and worshipped. Families love visiting fairs and melas to enjoy a memorable time and feast on traditional delicacies as well.

In different parts of India, there are certain Dussehra delicacies that are believed to bring good luck. In Uttar Pradesh, Dal paratha and Kheer are a must-have, while in Karnataka a sweet dosa is prepared. People in West Bengal feast on Rasgullas whereas Gujaratis indulge in Jalebi and Fafda.Additionally, certain items like Motichoor Laddoo and Paan are offered to Lord Hanuman and Curd and Rice to Goddess Durga due to their fondness towards the dishes.
