Karwa Chauth 2024 will be celebrated all around the country on October 20th, 2024. As a festival, Karwa Chauth holds huge significance as it is practised by women all over the world to ensure the safety and longevity of their husband’s lives and their married union. Wives and unmarried women observe a fast on this day and eat their dinner only after seeing the moon.

Significance of Karwa Chauth

significance of karwa chauth

Karwa Chauth also known as Karak Chaturthi is derived from the words ‘karwa’ meaning earthen pot and ‘chauth’ meaning ‘fourth’. The festival is celebrated on the fourth day of the month of Kartika by married and unmarried women. The day is revered with the belief that it emulates Goddess Parvati who observed a fast to obtain Lord Shiva as her husband.

Thus, married women keep a fast on this day to ensure the safety of their husbands while unmarried women pray for a husband as devoted and loving as Lord Shiva himself. Additionally, the fast is also believed to be the carrier of prosperity and luck for the family. Women pray to Goddess Parvati, Lord Shiva, Lord Ganesha and Karwa Mata on this day.

On Karwa Chauth, women wake up early, take a bath and eat the sargi prepared for them by their mother-in-law. They observe a nirjala (sans water) fast the entire day and only break it after looking at the moon and offering it an arghya using the karwa, eating a bite of food and drinking a sip of water from their husband’s hands.

Usually, women don the whole solah shringaar on this day including sindoor, bangles, bindi, mehendi etc, sing holy geet and read the story of Karwa Chauth together.
