Parineeta: Lalita Roy
Vidya Balan made a remarkable Bollywood debut with the 2005 Pradeep Sarkar directorial romantic drama, Parineeta playing the elegant and traditional character of Lalita Roy. Adapted from the 1914 Bengali novella of the same name, the film also featured Saif Ali Khan and Sanjay Dutt in lead roles. The story revolves around the lead characters, Lalita and Shekhar (played by Saif) portraying the delicate love story between childhood friends. The movie made Vidya bag a Filmfare Best Debut Actor award and was showcased at several International film festivals.

The Dirty Picture: Reshma
The 2011 musical biographical drama, The Dirty Picture proved Vidya Balan’s worth as an actor and is still one of the most iconic roles of her career. Inspired by the life of Silk Smitha, the late actor known for her erotic roles in movies, the movie left an unforgettable mark on the hearts of its audience.
Vidya Balan essayed the role of Reshma, an actor who rises to fame through sleazy songs and movies and was highly appreciated by the audience and critics equally. Despite having an ensemble of male star cast featuring names like veteran Naseeruddin Shah, Tusshar Kapoor, and Emraan Hashmi, she was hailed as the ‘hero of the film’. Kahaani: Vidya Bagchi
In the 2012 Sujoy Ghosh directorial, Kahaani, Vidya Balan did an exceptional job playing the role of a pregnant woman who travels from London to Kolkata in search of her missing husband. Besides Vidya, the film also starred talented actors like Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Parambrata Chatterjee in pivotal roles and explored the themes of feminism and motherhood in the male-dominated Indian society. The movie was declared a critical and commercial hit and Vidya’s acting performance was much appreciated by audiences. While the movie won three National Film Awards and five Filmfare Awards, Vidya won the Filmfare Best Female Actor award for her powerful performance.
Bhool Bhulaiyaa: Manjulika
Bhool Bhulaiyaa, the 2007 Priyadarshan directorial horror comedy established Vidya Balan as the acting powerhouse of Bollywood. Starring actors like Akshay Kumar, Shiney Ahuja, Ameesha Patel, Paresh Rawal, Manoj Joshi, late veteran actor Vikram Gokhale and Raj Pal Yadav in key roles, the movie took the box office by storm besides impressing critics and fans equally. To this day, her brilliant portrayal of two characters, Avni and Manjulika is praised by many Bollywood fans.
