Woven Whispers celebrates International Saree Day with a textile showcase by FDCI at the National Crafts Museum, New Delhi.
Woven Whispers celebrated the timeless legacy of the Indian saree with a textile presentation on the upcoming occasion of International Saree Day. Unfolding on the evening of 14th December at the Amphitheatre, National Crafts Museum & Hastakala Academy, Pragati Maidan, the showcase was a tri-partner initiative by the Development Commissioner (Handlooms), Ministry of Textiles, FICCI FLO, and FDCI. It was envisioned as a dialogue between heritage, fashion and the future, highlighting the evolution of Indian handlooms from craft to commerce while championing women weavers, artisans and creative entrepreneurs across the country.

The evening was graced by the Chief Guest, Dr. Malika Nadda, Chairperson, Asia Pacific Advisory Council of the Special Olympics Organisation, followed by Poonam Sharma, National President, FICCI FLO, along with Governing Body Members and Day Chair Ambar Pariddi Sahai, Smriti Puri, National Treasurer, FICCI FLO, and Sunil Sethi, Chairman, FDCI, who collectively underscored the importance of handlooms in India’s cultural and economic narrative.

A concise panel discussion titled Craft to Commerce was held, reflecting on the evolving handloom ecosystem, sustainability, women-led innovation and market linkages. Later, Weaves of India, an art installation, presented regional textiles as contemporary visual narratives.

The Loom Speaks, a fashion showcase, highlighted handloom as a living, evolving design language. Abraham & Thakore presented a refined exploration of ikat through graphic precision and archival reinterpretations; Akaaro by Gaurav Jai Gupta showcased engineered weaves that merged Banarasi craftsmanship with modern structure; Lahé Looms by Jahnabi Phookan foregrounded Assam’s indigenous silks through a lens of slow fashion and community-led weaving; while Advaya brought forth heirloom-quality handwoven textiles defined by nuanced textures, artisanal detailing and a contemporary sensibility.

What made the experience even more immersive is the classical dance and singing performances—seamlessly weaving together movement, music, and textiles, and reinforcing the cultural context of the saree as both attire and art form on the occasion of International Saree Day.
Woven Whispers reaffirmed the collective commitment of the Ministry of Textiles, FICCI FLO, and FDCI to strengthening designer–artisan collaborations, empowering women artisans and advancing Indian handlooms from heritage craft to global relevance.
