Govardhan Puja, also known as Annakut is celebrated on the first lunar day of the bright fortnight of the month of Kartika, on the fourth day of Diwali. Dedicated to Lord Krishna and the Govardan mountain, Govardhan Puja is an auspicious festival that symbolizes the strength and motherly spirit of nature alongside the protective side of Lord Krishna.
Why is Govardhan Puja Celebrated?
According to the legend, Lord Krishna broke the pride of Indradev on the Pratipada day of Shukla Paksha of the Kartik month. The saviour of the world, lifted the Govardhan mountain on his index finger to save the people of Braj from the wrath of Indra. To offer their thanks, the people of Braj began worshipping Lord Krishna and offering him delicious food. Since then, the ritual of worshipping the deity and the mountain that saved their lives people perform Govardhan Puja every year.
When is Govardhan Puja?
Govardhan Puja is being celebrated this year on 2nd November 2024. The auspicious muhurat for the day are as follows:
Morning: 6:34 am – 8:46 am
Vijay Muhurat: 2:09 pm – 2:56 pm
Evening: 3:23 pm – 5:35 pm
Twilight: 6:05 pm – 6:30 pm
How is Govardhan Puja Celebrated?
On the day of Govardhan Puja, a picture of Lord Krishna is made from cow dung and worshipped during the auspicious puja muhurat. 56 offerings, chappan bhog, including food and sweets are made and offered to Lord Krishna. It is believed that by doing this devotees get relief from all the sorrows and sufferings surrounding them.
Annakut ki sabzi, kheer, ladoo, panjiri, sooji halwa, makhan, kadhi, bajra, rice, gwar ki fali, puri, dahi balle and many other dishes are prepared in the bhog on the day of Govardhan Puja.
