The tradition of bringing a Ganesh idol into homes and worshipping it was revived later in the 19th century as a symbol of India’s independence by freedom fighter Bal Gangadhar Tilak. To date, the festival of Ganesh Chaturthi is one of the most awaited celebrations in the country where thousands line up every day to get a glimpse of their beloved god.
The most famous Ganesh idol in the country is made in the Lalbaug area of Mumbai where the idol is venerated as Lal Baug Cha Raja (The King of Lal Baug).
