Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan celebrate 47 years of marriage today. The couple was married on June 3, 1973, after the success of their movie ‘Zanjeer’. As senior Bachchan also shared on social media today, he wanted to take a trip to London post the success of ‘Zanjeer’. But his father said he could take a trip with Jaya only if he married her. So he obliged. Therefore, it has been 47 years and the couple has literally taken leaps and bounds of journeys together.

The duo first saw each other on the sets of ‘Guddi’ in 1971. At that time, Jaya Bachchan was already an established superstar, while Amitabh Bachchan was still making his name in the industry. Both were drawn to each other. Later, their interests bloomed into a full-on romance with their movies together to follow. Celebrating the couple, Wedding Affair enlists some of their most iconic cinematic works together.

Abhimaan, 1973

Amitabh

This movie shall remain etched in our memories forever for the kind of impact it created. The movie was a critical and commercial success owing to wonderful acting performance and music. The layered plot basically revolved around the shattered pride of man outshined by his talented wife. Amitabh Bachchan played the role of Subir Kumar who rides high on the popularity horse, as a singer. He later marries Uma Kumar (played by Jaya Bachchan) and influences his wife to become a singer as well. Their relationship enters a turmoil when Uma touches new heights of success.

The film garnered wide critical acclaim. The songs hit the top charts and the on-screen chemistry of the duo was widely appreciated by one and all. This movie remains one of their best movies together.

Zanjeer, 1973

Zanjeer is a Bollywood classic. It is a legendary movie that Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan immortalised with their superb acting and Prakash Mehra with his immaculate direction. This action movie remains a pivot in the era of Bollywood when action movies started catching the trend game. This movie rightly established Amitabh Bachchan as the ‘Angry Young Man’ of Bollywood.

This film was a cult success. The success of this blockbuster also marked the onset of an action-thriller cult of Indian cinema. With its success, Sr Bachchan also tied the knot with Jaya, as they made their journey to London.

Sholay, 1975

This movie is another cult-classic. Jai-Veeru’s friendship, Basanti’s chirpiness, Radha’s simplicity, Thakur’s anger and Gabbar’s evilness. The film is replete with all the right touches that form a Bollywood blockbuster. Sholay is a dacoit western or a curry western that Indians have enjoyed.

The film’s dialogues and certain characters became extremely popular, contributing to numerous cultural memes and becoming part of India’s daily vernacular. In January 2014, Sholay was re-released to theatres in the 3D format. The music of the movie was also extremely popular among the masses. The film still remains one of the most important movies of Indian cinema.

Mili, 1975

This movie is another one that established Amitabh and Jaya’s unmatchable chemistry on-screen. Shekhar Dayal has moved into a new neighbourhood and is just not pleased with the new surroundings. He resents the noise children make while playing, as he prefers quiet and solitude. His reclusion is shattered when his neighbour, Mili, comes into his life. At first, he hates the intrusion, but then grows to be fond, and then ultimately fall in love with her. When the time comes for him to propose to this sunny, cheerful, and positive young lady, he is told that she has only a few more months to live. (Source: IMDb)

Silsila, 1981

This was also the last film to feature Amitabh Bachchan with Jaya Bachchan until they appeared together on screen 20 years later in Karan Johar’s Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham… (2001). Initially a flop, the film garnered the ‘cult-classic’ status eventually. Especially the music has been very popular and peppy. The music still remains one of the most iconic soundtracks of all time.
