The 2020 VMAs took the most interesting turn as 2020 is also the year of pandemic. The awards might not have had a traditional red carpet with attendees strutting to the roar of wildly screaming fans in the background, but the fashion still delivered. Presenters, nominees and winners served looks. They gathered remotely or in audience-less spaces scattered throughout New York City. The fashion looks ranged from formal to full-on casual.
During a live pre-show, a segment dubbed “VMA Fashion Flashbacks” was a nostalgic attempt to remind us of the award show’s iconic fashion moments pre-coronavirus, when celebs could walk the red carpet without needing to worry about masks and social distancing: Lizzo sizzling in a custom red-sequin Moschino column, Cardi B in a white cone-bra jumpsuit by Christian Siriano, Taylor Swift glittering in a colourful Versace blazer and thigh-high boots. Lady Gaga
Gaga wore a dramatic metallic dress paired with super high platformed lace-up boots and a headpiece that’s perfect for someone nominated for nine awards. “I was wearing face shields before it was a thing,” Lady Gaga joked on Twitter. And we love to see it! She even matched her hair to her Area dress.
Machine Gun Kelly
The rapper-singer strutted the show in a hot pink Berluti double-breasted suit styled with a matching sleeveless turtleneck underneath. Also, the star accepted his Moon Person for best alternative music video. He removed the jacket and posed in his sleeveless turtleneck and we are all fashion hearts.
Miley Cyrus
When she arrived at the awards, the “Midnight Sky” singer, 27, donned a sheer black dress that featured sparkling adornments. The ensemble was completed with matching elbow-length gloves and Jewelry by Loree Rodkin.
Bella Hadid
Behold: Bella’s outfit, which as you can see consists of a completely see-through shirt that takes me right back to 1995, a time only slightly less alarming than 2020. Bella Hadid presented an award at the 2020 MTV VMAs and decided to go with something entirely sheer.
Maluma
Another sharply dressed man? Maluma, who donned this silky black Versace suit with silver Medusa-clad hardware and high-heeled boots for a monochromatic black moment. Maluma added an abundance of chunky jewellery to his silk suit to keep his look sleek — including double gold hoop earrings, a silver chain necklace and rings.
