And maybe, like so many brides, even you find yourself in a constant dilemma of colours, designs and silhouettes. It can be difficult to fathom which one is the right fit for you, amidst an ocean of new and upcoming designs.

Once you enter a market, it can be pretty overwhelming. There are all kinds of fabric including raw silk, micro velvet, chiffon, georgette, crepe and much more. And every trader is going to convince you why their fabric is the best and in fashion. At the time, you should know selecting the correct fabric according to your preference is the most important. If you haven’t tried a material before like raw silk, don’t experiment by buying a lehenga with that fabric. A lot of times, the brides buy their lehenga thinking about external factors like colour and design- which are no doubt important- but if the material isn’t soothing to your skin, then it might not turn out as planned. The best idea is to check out these fabrics by touching them and see if they feel soft against your hand. 

Number of Kali

A bridal lehenga can have up to 24 kalis to be fully flared, but then again it can vary depending on your waist size, the heaviness of the lehenga, and the cancan under it. According to several sources, women used to wear up to 32 kali lehenga, although, it feels a little over the top now and a bit uncomfortable to carry for hours on an end. We know, every bride wants to feel like the queen on her wedding day, so always remember to ask the number of kali to the vendor. There are times when you’d find almost a similar lehenga at a lower cost, it can be because of the lower number of kalis. The only problem with that is this type of lehenga ends up giving an A-line look. 

Bridal Lehenga Colour

This wedding season maroon has been ruling our hearts and we cannot get over how magnificent it looks in the Marwar couture. We’ve seen breath-taking combinations of maroon, golden, blue and deeper shades of green which feel perfect for winter weddings. But there is no compulsion that you need to go for darker hues. If you are scoping the market and fall in love with a beautiful pista green lehenga with pink detailed embroidery and a delicate dupatta- you should definitely go for it. The wedding industry has changed and you don’t have to stick to the same colours. You can experiment with lavender, aqua blue, ivory, and other pastel hues as well.

This goes without saying, research as much as you can before you step inside a market. You can read different blogs, watch videos, and ask people around about their experiences, to find where they got their bridal lehenga from, the designer they opted for, and the fabric, amongst other things. You can even research online to find the latest trends, and which colour you’re leaning towards- to make your job that much easier when you visit a bridal store. Needless to say, without this research you might feel overwhelmed with the variety of choices that fly in different dimensions, leaving you to decide amongst so many factors there and then in the store.  

Select according to the weather

Subconsciously, you might already know which type of lehenga you want, but it can be difficult to carry a georgette silhouette on the chilling nights of December, especially if you’re planning to have an outdoor lawn wedding. Better yet, just scan over a few fabrics, and consult which ones would be better for the weather in the month of your wedding. For instance, we believe brocade, velvet and silk are best for winter weddings and crepe, net and thinner fabrics for monsoon. 

Don’t forget to check out the blouse design

The blouse piece is attached to your lehenga fabric and sometimes has a pattern that needs to be stitched in a particular way. So, if you already have a blouse design in mind, check the bridal lehenga before finalising it. Also, a lot of the time they’re just showing you a sample piece and the final bridal set will be delivered to you in a couple of months. In such a case, you can ask them to change the bridal blouse embroidery and stitch it accordingly.

If you really think about it, embroidery is the one factor that makes a bridal lehenga stand out. It gives a certain structure and design and the more intricate it is- the better. Looking for a particular type of embroidery can be difficult so have a few options in mind. Zari, zardosi, and cut dana are common ones. Chikankari has been known to give that mystical aesthetic to bridal ensembles whereas Dabka has been trending with Marwari couture.
