Spotify threw a party celebrating the best new artist category for the Grammys on January 24, 2020, at The Lot Studios in Los Angeles. The pre-Grammy Best New Artist Nominees event was an invite-only party, in which all the nominees from the category performed. Eighteen-year-old Billie Eilish sang an acoustic rendition of her smash hit ‘Bad Guy’ — nominated for both record and song of the year — and Rosalía led a crew of white-clad dancers through a set that made clear why the Spanish electro-flamenco star is up for the best new artist.

Lil Nas X, also competing for six honours, was energetic as he worked the stage with hits like ‘Panini,’ ‘Rodeo’ and ‘Old Town Road,’ surprising the audience with Cyrus. Spanish singer Rosalía also brought out a special guest: Puerto Rican singer Ozuna joined her for the anthemic hit ‘Yo x Ti, Tu x Mi.’

Rosalía, who mixes traditional flamenco sounds with reggaeton and Latin trap, won album of the year at the Latin Grammys in November with “El Mal Querer.” The album is competing Sunday for best Latin rock, urban or alternative album. “It’s such an honour to perform here tonight, honestly, because I really admire all the artists who are performing here tonight,” she said.

Lizzo worked double duty Thursday night, running from Spotify’s event to sing another a four-song set at a pre-Grammys party thrown by her parent record label, Warner. The singer-rapper — who released her debut album in 2013 and toured for years before her major breakthrough last year — thanked Spotify for helping her reach a wider audience.
