Johnny Depp
Stills From Arizona Dream

Johnny Depp made his silver screen debut with 1984 superhit film A Nightmare on Elm Street. There’s been no looking back for the actor since then. Depp has been entertaining fans and has become one of the most sought after actors in the west. Since the 1980s, Johnny Depp has been taking his grunge style and dark profile from stage to stage. All while crafting a filmography with atypical, unique and sometimes almost personalized roles. Yesterday the actor celebrated his 57th birthday. Wedding Affair brings to you an entertaining list of Johnny Depp movies of the Hollywood actor that you can watch during this time.

Alice In Wonderland (2010)

Although young actress Mia Wasikowska was selected for title role of this Tim Burton-directed spectacular. All eyes, however, turned toward the appearance of Depp as the maddest of Mad Hatters.  With his bright orange hair and oversized top hat. Depp’s Hatter was a walking embodiment of Tim Burton’s films.  However, Depp takes time to show the tender side of the Hatter. In his scenes with Alice, he forges a bond with her, recognising perhaps that they are both outsiders in this strange wonderland.  Johnny Depp’s performance brought him his tenth Golden Globe nomination.

Edward Scissorhands (1990)

In the 1990s, a legendary collaboration began between Tim Burton, who is considered as the master of fantasy cinema. And Johnny Depp, the actor of a whole generation. After his blockbuster 21 Jump Street, Johnny Depp tried his hand at the dreamy feature film Edward Scissorhands. This project has a huge contribution in his international fame. A creation overlooked by his genius, Edward is equipped with blades instead of fingers. Giving free rein to a surrealist story alongside Depp’s ex-partner Winona Ryder. The actor took risks during filming with this scrap metal and unventilated suit that was constricting his body. His amazing and convincing performance makes him all the more endearing and believable. Do watch this one if you already haven’t.

Into The Woods (2014)

In his second Stephen Sondheim musical. Johnny Depp lands the plum role of The Big Bad Wolf. The wolf uses all of his seductive powers to lure Little Red Riding Hood to her grandmother’s house so that the wolf can have a tasty meal.  But what Depp does in the wolf’s signature song “Hello, Little Girl” is to perform it with a distinct sexual overtone which given the young age of Little Red Riding Hood, turns the creepy-meter up to several notches.  But it does give Into the Woods an adult dash. As a result, giving the film a reason to distinguish itself from the usual Disney kingdom fare. For all those those love this story, don’t give this one a miss.

Black Mass (2015)

It will be less to say that Johnny Depp gave a stellar performance in this film. Johnny Depp received his third SAG Best Actor nomination for this performance as a famed South Boston mobster James “Whitey” Bulger.  It won’t be wrong to say that the flawless prosthetic makeup allowed Depp to disappear into the persona of Whitey. Also, the actor’s convincing performance makes his scenes all the more gripping. Keeping much of his rage buried under a serene facade until it explodes into dangerous, violent outbursts.  Although Johnny Depp’s Whitey is always front-and-center, Black Mass will always be an ensemble piece and Depp’s character work here allows him blend in extremely smoothly with his fellow actors.  This is one of Depp’s best later-career performances. To prove this right, the supremely talented artist also earned his third Screen Actors Guild nomination for his performance as Whitey.
