The iconic Lexus IS gets a sporty makeover with the brand-new 2021 Lexus IS. The next-generation 2021 Lexus IS wasn’t launched as scheduled at the New York International Auto Show in April. But the model debuted online on June 15. The new IS features an exterior redesign taking inspiration from the look of the ES. It’s 30mm longer and 30mm wider than its predecessor, with extended wheel arches to accommodate larger 19-inch wheel options.
Americans are used to the IS, which debuted almost 20 years ago as a reliable compact luxury sedan. And now, without changing dramatically, it’s getting sportier. The 2021 IS, on sale in late fall, is slightly wider and longer than the existing car, but with the same 110.2-inch wheelbase. The wheels are now 18 inches in standard form, and 19-inch wheels (a BBS style is optional on the F Sport model) are available. (Source: Barrons)
Every exterior body panel is new, at least, and even the door glass doesn’t seem to be carried over from the 2020 model. The new IS has a lower sharklike front end with an even larger and more complex spindle grille than before, and F Sport models have additional functional air intakes. The kicked-up C-pillar is more BMW than what’s found on actual BMWs, and I like the surfacing on the lower body with a line that spears up ahead of the rear wheel arch. (Source: CNET)
Lexus claims the widened and lowered stance “nods to the inherently high level of driving performance the IS possesses”. But is also boasts additional styling lines aim to enhance visual aggression. The F-Sport models feature a unique version of the car’s 3D spindle grille, using a mesh pattern and a lower air intake. New triple-beam LED headlights have been used, sitting inside redesigned clusters. Also, a sloping rear quarter pillar and lowered rear deck join a new “blade-style” light bar.
