The elation of Rema Devi, a single mother from Thiruvananthapuram’s Pothencode knew no bounds as three among her quintuplets married in Guruvayur on Saturday. Clad in red Kanchipuram silk sarees and similar gold ornaments, her three daughters had a small wedding following all COVID-19 protocols. The ‘Pancharatnam’ quintuplets who became popular through media reports looked stunning in their wedding attires.

About the Wedding

Devi, a native of Nannatukavu in Thiruvananthapuram district, single-handedly raised her quintuplets — four daughters and a son — through their teenage and adult years after her husband died by suicide in 2005. As they were born on the day of ‘Uthram’ star in the Malayalam calendar, they were named by Devi and her husband Prem Kumar as Utthara, Utthama, Uthra, Uthraja and Uthrajan. Three of them now had their wedding on the same day.

On Saturday, television cameras rolled as Utthara, Uthama and Uthra tied the knot with their respective bridegrooms at the temple as Devi, in a white saree, looked on. Uthraja, Uthrajan and their close family members were present on the occasion. Uthra, a fashion designer, married Ajith Kumar, a hotel manager in Muscat. Utthara, an online journalist, married KB Mahesh Kumar, a video-journalist. While Uthama, an anaesthesia technician, married G Vineeth, an accountant in Muscat. (Source: The Indian Express)

“I’m very, very happy to see three of them tying the knot in front of God. My fourth daughter was also set to be married today but her bridegroom was stuck abroad. It will take place now at a later date,” Devi told reporters after the wedding.

The Journey

Pancharathnams and their mother have had a tumultuous life. This was ever since their father, Premkumar, took his own life when the kids were aged just nine. As their plight garnered media attention, philanthropists swooped in and extended financial assistance. A native of Thiruvananthapuram, their mother soon got a job with the District Cooperative Bank in Pothencode. However, Remadevi developed a heart condition and had to undergo pacemaker implantation. This wedding hence gains a lot of fame among the media. (Source: News18)

The daughters hope that the families of their partners, too, help them to maintain the love and unique bond that they all have been cherishing for a lifetime. As the wedding plans matured and developed, Uthrajan, their only brother received a job offer overseas. But he prioritised the wedding of his sisters over everything else. Uthrajan would perform the duties of the elder-most member of the family for the wedding.
